Beware: One Ring Phone Scam Alert

Published by Torry Crass on

The short version is that if you get a phone call from an unknown number that rings once and hangs up, do not call it back.

Several news outlets have reported on this over the past couple of days and I thought I would do the same since I've actually received a few of these from 268 (Antigua).  Based on the reports they come in from a variety of foriegn numbers and if you call them back will charge you a hefty connection fee and per minute charges.  Costing around $20-30 from what I've read, as well as a high per minute fee as it connects you to whatever they feel like tossing in your ear to keep you on the line and charge you as much as they can.

Additionally, you won't receive any notification of the charges or risk posed to you, the charges will just show up on your next bill and you'll be left wondering what happened.  This scam is known as cramming.

The known risky area codes are:

  • Antigua and Barbuda (268)
  • The Dominican Republic (809)
  • Jamaica (876)
  • The British Virgin Islands (284)
  • Grenada (473)

Please be careful and keep an eye on your incoming calls to make sure you don't fall prey to this nasty one.
